Painting the Brooklyn Bridge in New York

All it takes is a little research to realise that some places are veritable magnets for artists! Such is the case of New York's famous Brooklyn Bridge, the oldest suspension bridge in the United States. It links the borough of Brooklyn to Manhattan, the economic and artistic heart of New York City, and indeed of the United States itself.

How many artists, and photographers in particular, have depicted this bridge in their work? In how many films has this iconic bridge been seen to shatter? It's hard to say, but here's a hand-painted version.

Crossing the East River, the bridge takes us straight towards Manhattan and its buildings with their characteristic silhouettes. The overall effect seems rather stylised, and the colours chosen by the artist, the representation of the water in a net and the play of light suggest that the view was taken at night. The textured sky, meanwhile, gives us an idea of the constant bustle and effervescence that reigns in the city.
