With its square proportions, this painting already highlights its subject. It is the stern of a sailing boat, most likely a three-masted vessel. The framing is interesting, highlighting the front of the boat and its sails. The impression of strength that emerges comes from the unusual way in which the painting is read, from left to right, but also from the figures at the front of the sailboat and the trawler in the background: both are very small and contrast with the size of our sailboat.

The colours used here also contrast sharply: the sailboat is dark in its navy and grey-blue tones, while the background, in which the distance rises, is white.

Everything is done to give the sailboat a central place in this composition, whose tones and richness are reminiscent of the art nouveau posters for the great naval lines of the France or the Statendam.
