Zebra eye painting
The zebra is an animal that has been represented over and over again in contemporary painting and black and white photography. This is to be expected for an animal with such a graphic coat.
The artist has chosen to paint this generously sized canvas (100 x 100). Here, the animal's skin is painted on aluminium foil, a technique that is very much in vogue at the moment. The result is a lovely contrast between a deep, raw black and white areas left blank. The metal parts are then scraped to produce half-tone shades ranging from white to ivory and light greys.
What's the point of a zebra painting when it comes to decorating?
You can imagine this contemporary painting in a flat with pop tones: in fact, the zebra and its skin were used in decoration in many forms in the 70s. You could also imagine this painting in a graphic ensemble, a room where the dominant colours would be black and white. It's also possible to dust off an old decorative style, the zebra hunting trophy.
